The SGFYM is a music festival held in Cardiff, offering performance and competition opportunities to young musicians from Cardiff and South Wales up to the age of 23.

The aim of the festival is to foster musical excellence by providing a friendly and encouraging environment to gain performance experience. Medals and Trophies are awarded and all entrants receive a written, professional assessment.

In 2023 we are running a one-day festival instead of the usual two or three days. This means that slots and classes are limited. Once all slots for each class are booked out, a waiting list will be opened. You will get notified if a place is available. We apologise in advance to anyone who might not get a slot to participate this year as we this is the first festival since the pandemic.

The South Glamorgan Festival for Young Musicians is affiliated to The British & International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance & Speech and is a registered charity (No. 1062343) run entirely by volunteers. My three children all found the experience throughly enjoyable. Although they were nervous competing and performing the adjudicators created a relaxed atmosphere and the whole experience was about learning not just from their own performances but those of others.
I loved the way that time was taken to demonstrate techniques and suggest improvements for dynamics and artistic interpretation. Care was taken when giving feedback and there was a real understanding of the difficulties encountered at each stage of learning an instrument.
I consider this a really valuable festival and competition.
