SPECIALIST CLASSES   45 - 52

These classes are for the more serious young musician and are highly competitive.
All adjudications given will reflect this
Unaccompanied Bach For unaccompanied solo performances of the music of J.S. Bach. The piece must be a single movement. The class is open to any performer aged 18 or under on 31/8/2008 The class is for bowed strings only. £6.00

Song Recital For the more advanced singer up to 25 years of age, (professional singers NOT allowed). The programme should consist of at least two contrasting pieces, one of which should be in the original foreign language, (Welsh is NOT considered to be a foreign language). Operatic arias & Song may be included. Songs fromTheatre & Film are NOT allowed in this class. £7.50

Junior Recitalist For junior musicians who wish to perform a more extended repertoire. EITHER two or more contrasting pieces, OR a single piece, such as one movement from a concerto or sonata. The class is open to any performer currently in school year 6 or under. We recommend that entrants should be at least Grade V standard. £7.50

Young Recitalist For young musicians who wish to perform a more extended repertoire. EITHER two or more contrasting pieces, OR a single piece, such as one movement from a concerto or sonata. The class is open to any performer currently in school year 9 or under. We recommend that entrants should be at least Grade VI standard. £9.00

Senior Recitalist Two or more contrasting pieces. This class is open to any performer aged 18 or under on 31/8/2008 £10.00

Jazz Solo Open to any solo performer aged 18 or under on 31/8/2008. The class is open to any instrument and also to vocalists. The performer may be accompanied by an adult or may use a taped/recorded accompaniment. £6.00

Composition An exciting chance for our budding young composers, and good practice for GCSE Music. Compose a piece of music. This can be a solo or for up to three musicians. This may be up to 3 minutes long, and must include a modulation and tempo change. Send in the entry form and fee by the closing date 8 th March 2008 . We must receive your completed composition by the 31 st March 2008 to allow time for marking by the adjudicator. Please then come to the class at the appointed time (you will be notified of this by first week in April) and perform your piece. . £10.00

Concerto Class One movement from a concerto. This class is open to any performer aged 18 or under on 31/8/2008. £10.00

ACCOMPANISTS

You may use your own accompanist, if you have one, or request the services of the official accompanist for vocal ensembles and any solo class except classes 45-52

Please note that taped accompaniments are only allowed in the Jazz Solo Class (50)

If you request an official accompanist, you must send a copy of the accompaniment part with your entry. If this is not sent, your accompanist's fee will be returned immediately and you will have to make other arrangements. Late applications for the accompanists are at the discretion of the Committee and the accompanists. Exceptional circumstances may be taken into consideration

N.B.   Adults are allowed to accompany vocal ensembles only.
Adults are NOT allowed to conduct any competitive ensemble entry.
Ensembles must not exceed 8 people.

TIME LIMITS
Please adhere to the time limits allowed. The programming and adjudicators are precisely scheduled, therefore performers going over time WILL BE STOPPED.
Entrants in classes 46,49 and 52 are expected to demonstrate the ability to choose a suitable programme.

AGE GROUPS
These are divided according to Education Authority School Years.
(5th Birthday between 1/9/2007 and 31/8/2008 = Year R; 6th Birthday between these dates = Year 1 etc .
Infant (Class 1) Year 2 and Under
Junior Year 6 and Under
Intermediate Year 9 and Under
Senior 18th Birthday before 31/8/2008

GENERAL GUIDELINES

•  The competition is open to any young performers who are aged 18 years or under on 31/08/2008 , except the Song Recital Class, where the age limit is 25 years upon that date.

•  Professional Musicians and early entrants to Music Colleges, e.g. Guildhall, Academy or Universities etc and studying solely music are NOT permitted to enter.

•  The adjudicator must be provided with a complete copy of the music at the beginning of each class (Photocopies are permitted for this purpose but please note that in order to comply with copyright law the original must be in evidence at the performance).

•  SGFYM reserves the right to refuse entries.

•  Some performers will be invited to sing or play at the Gala Concert. Performers for this concert are recommended by the adjudicators, NOT SGFYM, and every effort will be made to include all those recommended in the Concert. However, time constraints may make this impossible.

•  The adjudicators' decisions in all cases are final.

•  If you wish to use an official accompanist, please see section marked Accompanists.

PLEASE NOTE KATE BURNETT IS NOT AVAILABLE, EITHER PRIVATELY OR AS AN OFFICIAL ACCOMPANIST.

•  Please keep a copy of the classes you have entered and keep this document for reference.

•  SGFYM reserve the right to divide or combine classes to accommodate the number of entries received.

•  Send queries to SGFYM by post, enclosing a S.A.E. or email us. Please do NOT contact by telephone.

•  The SGFYM respects the Data Protection Act 1984. Except for Festival literature, data will not be disclosed to any third party, other than computer maintenance organisations as permitted by law.

•  Please add £1 per entrant to cover postage and administration with your entry form.

Parents and teachers are reminded that the safety of young people and their belongings are their responsibility during the Festival.
